Despite clashing with the famous Sydney City to Surf Run the day was well attended by 45 people including Kate who ran from the City to Bondi before coming to the Seminar Day. At the AGM Sue Pinkerton was re-elected as President along with a full compliment of active committee members. The Seminar Day was a full day with 4 invited speakers presenting interesting and relevant information on TSC with many opportunities for attendees to meet & chat with new and old friends. The Genetic Counselor, Gayathri Parasivam presented an overview of the role of genetic counselors and TSC affected families. She explained the genetics of TSC and also gave an overview of the members of the multidisciplinary team of the TSC Clinic Randwick. The second speaker, Sue Cairns an Education Consultant presented an extremely practical session on how to develop positive behaviour in all children including those with special needs. The Renal Specialist, Dr Sean Kennedy addressed the various types of renal involvement in TSC. The illustrations certainly provided an added dimension to the understanding of the audience. Guidelines for the management of renal issues were suggested. The final presenter Dr John Lawson, the Honorary Medical Advisor – Neurologist for ATSS gave an overview of the latest International Research and discussed the Rapamycin trials that are being conducted in the UK & USA. ATSS is grateful to the 3 Medical Speakers who provided the attendees with an opportunity for a Panel discussion in response to questions from the attendees. Evaluation and Feedback from the attendees was very positive, showing appreciation for the opportunity to attend and learn more about TSC and meet with other people who understand the TSC experience. |
